School updates

October 28, 2022

It's hard to believe that we have already reached the end of October! If your child, with your child's teacher's permission, is coming in costume this Saturday, please make sure they leave any props (swords, toy guns, wands, etc) and any masks at home. Also, make sure they are wearing a t-shirt and shorts/leggings underneath in case they get too warm and need to take off the costume. Thank you!

Before you know it, our little ghouls and goblins will be all Mykolai- and Christmas-crazy, and our Mykolai show and bazaar will be here. We've got a lot to do before then! Please support your student(s) in learning their parts/songs for the show once they get them, and support the school by signing up to make/bake items and help out. And thanks!
We need someone to sign up for Hall Monitor 1 (near the cafeteria) for this Saturday (October 29). If you are available, please sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090445a9a72e5-ukrainian1

Main items for this week include:

  • It can get very warm on the stage and there's unfortunately little that can be done to improve the airflow. This past week, we had a few kids who didn't feel all that well due to overheating. To keep kids as comfortable as possible, please have your kids dress in layers and make sure they have a water bottle with them.

  • Upper grades have dance in lieu of their third period class this Saturday. Please wear or bring suitable footwear.

  • Upper grades students will have a slightly revised schedule as Iryna Gaiduk will be out this week. Please check your emails later this week for the revised schedule. The petrykivka painting that was planned for culture classes this week will be postponed.

  • We are another week closer - our Sv. Mykolai Show and Christmas Bazaar happens in about 7 weeks! Please sign up to help by making baked goods, varenyky, vushka, holubtsi or borshch and/or helping the day of the event. Please sign up sooner than later so that we know what items we have enough of and what we may still need. It takes many volunteers to pull this off! Thank you!

  • New in Community News: a new Facebook group for Ukrainian women in greater DC, a beautiful sunflower print being sold to raise funds for Ukraine, and an upcoming benefit dance performance at St. Andrew. Check out the Community News section for all the details.

  • Clothing Drive continues (see below for details).

Mykolai/Bazaar Preparations:
  • We are pleased to share that our Sv. Mykolai Show and Christmas Bazaar on December 17th will be held at the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family (4250 Harewood Road, Washington DC).
  • If you can make something - bake sale, varenyky, borshch, holubtsi - or can help on the day of, please sign up here.
  • Take the 100 Varenyky challenge! Or 100 vushok. Or if dough isn't your thing, we also now have the 25 holubtsi challenge. If you make 100 varenyky or vushok, packed in 4 bags of 25, or a tray of 25 holubtsiv and bring it to school to donate to the bazaar, this will count as fulfilling a coffee/donut duty slot for your family. Filling for varenyky should be either potato and onion or kapusta and onion. Filling and dough for both varenyky and vushka should be vegan (no dairy or egg). If you have questions, would like additional information, or want to schedule a dropoff, please contact Natalka Lupichuk (571-239-0256 (call or text) or nat_lupichuk@yahoo.com).
  • If you or someone you know is interested in being a vendor at the bazaar, either online or in person, please contact Liala Johnson (703-786-8948 (call or text) or perfectlyaj@gmail.com).
