Teaching Opportunities for 2011-2012 Academic Year 

 Since 1966, the Taras Shevchenko School of Ukrainian Studies has been making a difference in the lives of children in the Ukrainian-American community in the Washington DC area by providing a foundation for reading, writing, speaking and communicating in Ukrainian in the early years, followed by a program in Ukrainian studies in the grades 6-11. Currently, the school educates over 100 children, from grades K-11. To meet the needs of our growing community and school, the TSSUS is  seeking well-organized, creative and highly motivated candidates interested in teaching Ukrainian as a second language, as well as Ukrainian history, literature, geography, and culture at all levels.   The teachers follow the school curriculum, but also work closely with the principal in order to implement creative pedagogical methodologies.

 The selected applicants would be responsible for the following functions including, but not limited to:

·         Educating students by using professional pedagogical standards and following the standard curriculum guidelines approved by the TSSUS.

·         Developing and presenting lesson plans by using a variety of techniques, including lectures, projects, audiovisual and library resources, games, music and physical movement.

·         Together with teaching assistants, tailoring the course of study and developing modifications for several levels of academic ability and previous achievement within the classroom. 

·         Monitoring, assisting, correcting, and grading student results by preparing assignments and tests for in-school preparation and homework; 

·         Maintaining safe, secure, and healthy educational environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.

·         Keeping parents informed by maintaining records of academic performance, attendance, and social acclimation; reporting on all elements of student development in written progress reports and report cards, as well as during parent -teacher conferences, both regularly scheduled and as -needed.

·         Updating job knowledge by attending faculty meetings; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations. 

·         Enhancing school's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

 Minimum Qualifications

·         BA/BS degree required; Excellent command of Ukrainian; proficiency in English;

·         One to two years minimum experience, preferably in academic environment;

·         Strong organizational, verbal communication and interpersonal skills;

·         Ability to work within guidelines provided in teacher handbook, requests of the administration, prioritize work and handle multiple tasks. 

·         Priority will be given to candidates with pedagogical training, education and/or experience.

·         Teaching, communication, listening, classroom management, resolving conflict, presentation skills, motivating others, collaborative teaching and ability to be a member of a team;
